I will never forget the moment my husband become a father for the first time. It was something we had spoken about with much anticipation for years, and then seeing him finally hold is first-born in his arms was a sight to behold. The fact that he was Noah’s primary caregiver for the first 24 hours meant his introduction to fatherhood was fast and all-consuming. I had experienced a birth complication which saw me being rushed to emergency theatre and Brendon was left alone in the delivery room with a crying baby, unsure if he would ever see me again.
He changed Noahs first nappies, hovered over him at every medical check, and swaddled him in blankets before I was even able to breastfeed our newborn baby. I guess the strange thing is that, although our entry into parenthood was a little scary and unexpected, I was never the least bit surprised at the way my baby’s father filled his big new shoes and welcomed his new role as caretaker to the tiniest human we had ever laid eyes on. He was a natural. He was just so good at caring for someone else on such a sacrificial level.
And he has carried on NOT surprising me every day since then. We welcomed a second baby boy onto our family two years later and once again I was blown away by his capacity to be the best father, whatever that meant on any given day. He revelled in his role as dad to two boys and everything about the way he doted on his boys was something I marvelled at and celebrated.
Fast-forward four years and watching him become a father to his first and only daughter has the most joy-filled experience and, only solidified the fact that he is without a doubt the best there is. Not a day goes by where this guy has not put his children and family first. Not a day has gone by where he hasn’t astounded me with his incredible commitment to all their individual lives. He loves them passionately, without letting them get away with naughty stuff, he teaches them without getting impatient, he spoils them without allowing to become entitled, he shows them he’s human by always saying he’s sorry when he’s messed up and always no matter what teaches them to be honest and forgive easily.
TO THE BEST DAD
I’de like to publicly honour the father of my three children, who is quite frankly the best there is. I am so grateful to you B-Boy for all you do for us and for always putting your babies first. Thank you for playing with them and never being scared to get your hands dirty or get stuck into the messy parts of parenting. Thank you for guiding them and always being honest and open with them about things that sometimes scare me 🙂 Thanks you for always striving to be a better parent and admitting your own mistakes and downfalls. Thanks you for reminding me that we are all doing our best on this parenting journey and that no matter what, we have each other’s backs. Witnessing your fatherhood journey has been one of my greatest joys and privileges and I can’t wait to see the love our kids have for you grow as fast as they do!
