I met Anthea, owner, and founder of Nunabean about 4 years ago when our kids, Noah and  Nuna were in playschool together. I remember the many conversations we had about her business, but mostly I remember the passion in her voice and the sparkle in her eyes every time she spoke about Nunabean. I could see how much joy the process of producing hand-made products brought her. Anthea’s passion for her craft and creativity runs deep in her veins, something that I find truly inspiring.

NUNABEAN’S STORY :

Nunabean Pty Ltd started out as a hobby and weekend passion project producing baby items I loved and would want my daughter to wear. I, myself struggled to find quality handmade clothing that was contemporary and stylish, with hints of yesterday year, whilst still being cosy and most importantly sparked joy. And were produced ethically and not for the mass market! Having a fresh little being also made me more conscious of the materials I chose to work with, and what worked best on her sensitive baby skin.

When my daughter was 2 months old I returned to full-time work, part-time study at UCT. (Business Acumen for Artists Course) My weekend passion sprouted into a business idea. I am grateful I was to be able to continue learning and grow as a business through the CCDI and their courses in business and management. I strongly believe in constant education for myself and those individuals that produce and buy Nunabean.”

ABOUT NUNABEAN CLOTHING :

Nunabean’s beautiful, contemporary hand-knitted baby clothing for boys and girls is handcrafted with locally sourced, handspun and hand-dyed natural yarns (pure wool, 100% Bamboo, Cotton/Bamboo or locally grown Alpaca yarns) to create the softest keepsakes that are sure to be cherished and passed on throughout the years. Nunabean’s hand-knitted range includes vintage-inspired rompers, ponchos, jerseys-like-granny-use-to-knit, eco-beanies, bloomers, blankets, leg-warmers, scarves, and mittens.

Designed mainly in 3 basic colours (Natural, Cloud, Storm), adaptable for both genders, allows all items to be mix-and-matched, or worn just on their own. Occasionally, a limited edition range of the popular items are produced in a variety of earth and berry tones.
Each piece is a really unique, one-of-a-kind product. Various artisans individually hand-sprouting each piece in the comfort of their homes, each with different tension and sometimes their own spin on the pattern, but primarily using one or all of the 3 main basic Nunabean colours. Each item comes with a label with the name of the artisan who created your garment, carefully placed in a recyclable fabric bag. (How freaking special is this?)

Nunabean is running a promo at the moment on their gorgeous hand-knitted Eco beanies! Their gorgeous selection of beanies which usually retail for R280, are now R200 in-store or R190 online (Exc delivery), delivered straight to your door.

If you live in CT though why not make your way down to the Watershed at the V&A in the next week and see first hand how truly lovely this brand is!

⇑ Also featured: The ever-so-cute Lotus Scarf. ♥

⇑ Featured: striped Eco Beanie, Lotus scarf, and Mits.

Remember, these are made with100% Bamboo, Cotton/Bamboo or locally grown Alpaca yarns and they will last many years! They really are the perfect to accessory for your little one (especially in this cold Cape Town Weather!) and can eventually be handed down to a sibling or friend. As someone who loves to support local brands like this, I have come to appreciate that yes not everyone can afford the luxury of hand-made, but I also understand the time, work and money that goes into making locally produced and high-quality goods like this. I for one have definitely become more aware of sustainable fashion and why it’s sometimes better to invest in quality items like this when you can! It’s also so much better for our environment!

The most amazing thing is that no two beanies are identical, so when you purchase a Nunabean product, you are really getting something so very unique and that nobody else has! ♥

As mentioned, If you’re keen to get your hands on one of these one-of-kind beanies for your little one or as a gift for a friend or family member,  there are two ways you can make use of this special.

  1. If you would like to select the hat yourself and get an idea of sizing and fit, you can head down to the Watershed at the V&A Waterfront where you find their shop. If you mention the code THE MOM DIARIES, you will only pay R200! That’s an R80 saving to enjoy a coffee and a sandwich while you down there 🙂 Or to put towards something else you like at their store!
  2. Go straight to their website and see what cute colors are on offer and only pay R190! Shipping will still apply but, you will still make a saving of R90 to have the convenience of it being dropped at your door. (I always think it’s a good idea to buy more than one item to make it more worthwhile, so think about buying two beanies (one for a baby shower gift?) or have a look at some of their other items! ) *Please note that this promo only runs from Tuesday 23 July – Saturday 3rd August and is open to SA customers only.

And if you’re not convinced yet you want a cute beanie for this cold weather, maybe more pictures of Hunter modeling their range will seal the deal. 🙂 I personally love the Natural and Storm, but there’s also something cute about the stripes hey?

⇑ Also featured here: The lotus scarf, which is just so cute and practical for little people in the cold. They look SUPER adorable on babies!! 🙂

Let me know what you think and which ones are your fave! So many striped ones to choose from! You can follow Nunabean on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with all their offerings, specials and future pop-up stores across the Cape!
