There are a few things that mark the beginning of summer for me. Those first balmy evenings where it becomes apparent you no longer need that extra layer of bedding. The smell of sunscreen on your first of many visits to the beach. The smell of braai meat being turned on the Weber on a lazy Saturday afternoon, the fragrance permitting the air at every turn. The sound (and smell!) of a lawn being freshly mowed and let’s not forget the first summer cocktail shared with some of good mates.
And then there’s the start of Galileo’s Open Air Cinema as they return after a long, cold winter that bring with them a feeling of happiness and festivity. It’s a special time of year where people begin to see the end in sight and start winding down to enjoy the simple pleasures of life a little more.
I was invited to the season opening of Galileo Open Air Cinema at Kirstenbosch two weeks ago and it was so so much fun! With my hubs on his way to Amsterdam that night I took the opportunity to call it a girls night and ended up having the best time with my friend Jules. It worked out perfectly because as much as my husband would endure most things for my happiness, the fact that I got to watch Dirty Dancing with someone who loves it as much as I do just felt right. We ate some delicious food, drank wine, munched on popcorn and sang along to all the famous songs. All under the beautiful night sky (and a warm blanket of course!) It was bliss! (They even supply a back rest!)
If you’re NEW to the concept, Galileo Open Air Cinema is just that….. An open air theatre that screens all your favourite movies at beautiful venues across the Cape. From the Southern Suburbs to the City centre to the breathtaking winelands, there is something for everybody to enjoy this summer!
“This season, you’ll be spoiled with a whole host of new venues and movies on offer with no price increases! Take your pick from various regular venues, from Kirstenbosch Gardens to Central Park in Century City, as well as brand new partner venues at Glenellen Farm, Kenilworth Racecourse, Rustenburg Girls’ High School, Willowbridge Mall and a sensational new spot at the V&A Waterfront’s ‘Battery Park’. Your favourite summer staple is also coming to you every Saturday at a different wine estate across the gorgeous Cape Winelands, which leaves zero excuse to stay home on the weekends.
Due to popular demand from movie lovers across the Winelands, they have extended their screenings to take place EVERY Saturday at a host of gorgeous estates in Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl and Wellington.
From adored classics like ‘Dirty Dancing’, ‘Grease’ and ‘The Sound Of Music’ to 21st century smash hits like ‘Me Before You’, ‘Lion’ and ‘Murder On The Orient Express’, The Galileo offers something to suit each and every taste. While the movie is the highlight of the evening, there’s plenty else to keep you entertained and in awe.
Exquisite views, tranquil settings, interactive games, a fabulous selection of vino and gourmet market goodies are just a few of the “extras” you can look forward to when doors open at 5pm. Once you’ve drooled over the candyfloss sunset and nestled up to your partner, friends, or even just your bottle of pinotage, the stars come out, and the movie begins. ”
